How Do Sump Pumps Work?

Sump pumps get installed in pits in the lowest part of the basement to operate only when water fills the pit. The water enters through perimeter drains or perforated drainpipes and is directed into the pit. The sump pump has a float that rises with the water and will engage the sump pump when it reaches a designated level.
